Certified Random: A New Order for Coauthorship

چکیده
Alphabetical name order is the default norm for joint publications in economics. However, alphabetical order confers greater benefits on the first author. In a two-author model, we introduce and study certified random order : the uniform randomization of names made universally known by a commonly understood symbol. Certified random order (a) distributes the gain from first authorship evenly over the alphabet, (b) allows either author to signal when contributions are extremely unequal, (c) will invade an environment where alphabetical order is dominant, (d) is robust to deviations, (e) may be ex-ante more efficient than alphabetical order, and (f) is no more complex than the existing alphabetical system modified by occasional reversal of name order. Ray thanks the National Science Foundation for support under grant numbers SES-1261560 and SES1629370. متن کاملUnderstanding Scientific Collaboration from the Perspective of Collaborators and Their Network Structures
Scientific collaboration is one of the key factors to trigger innovations. Coauthorship networks have been taken as representations of scholars’ collaboration for a long time. This study investigates how the authors’ attributes and the coauthorship network structures simultaneously influence the scientific collaboration among them. Exponential random graph models (ERGMs) are adopted in this res...
متن کاملEffects of research complexity and competition on the incidence and growth of coauthorship in biomedicine
BACKGROUND Investigations into the factors behind coauthorship growth in biomedical research have mostly focused on specific disciplines or journals, and have rarely controlled for factors in combination or considered changes in their effects over time. Observers often attribute the growth to the increasing complexity or competition (or both) of research practices, but few attempts have been ma...
متن کاملHomophily in coauthorship networks of East European sociologists
We study to what degree and how homophily and network properties affect individual citation counts of researchers in the sociology departments of three East European countries, namely Poland, Romania, and Slovenia. We built first-order personal coauthorship networks out of the Web of Science publication records. Each sociologist is assigned as a focal node or ego, while her coauthors are alters...
متن کاملBounds for CDFs of Order Statistics Arising from INID Random Variables
In recent decades, studying order statistics arising from independent and not necessary identically distributed (INID) random variables has been a main concern for researchers. A cumulative distribution function (CDF) of these random variables (Fi:n) is a complex manipulating, long time consuming and a software-intensive tool that takes more and more times. Therefore, obtaining approximations a...
